Private Label & Contract Manufacturing FAQs
We get asked these questions every day by founders launching a new brand and established companies scaling production. Read on for detailed, no-fluff answers about how private label cosmetics manufacturing, custom formulation, and contract manufacturing actually work with Glamcos Labs.
What is private label manufacturing and how is it different from custom formulation?
Private label manufacturing means you choose from our existing catalog of ready-to-go hair care, skin care, personal hygiene, and beauty formulations and put your own brand name, logo, and packaging on the product. It is the fastest and most cost-effective way to launch a personal care brand because the formula is already developed, tested, and stable — you skip months of research and development.
Custom formulation, on the other hand, means our in-house chemists build a brand-new formula from scratch based on your specific requirements — target skin or hair concern, texture, fragrance profile, active ingredients, clean-label or organic positioning, and price point. It takes longer and usually requires a higher minimum order quantity, but the result is a unique product exclusive to your brand that competitors cannot simply reorder off a shelf. Many of our clients start with private label products to launch quickly and move select hero SKUs to custom formulation once the brand has traction.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for private label and custom formulation products?
Our MOQ starts as low as 1,000 units per SKU for most private label hair care, skin care, and personal hygiene formulations, which makes us accessible to new and small D2C brands, salons, and boutique retailers who don’t want to tie up large capital in inventory. As order volume increases, per-unit pricing improves significantly, so brands scaling toward 10,000, 25,000, 50,000 or 100,000+ units see meaningful cost efficiencies in raw materials, packaging, and production runs.
Custom formulation projects typically carry a higher MOQ — generally starting around 3,000 to 5,000 units per SKU — because a dedicated batch, stability testing, and quality control process is built specifically for that formula. We are happy to discuss phased MOQs for multi-SKU launches, and our team can recommend the most capital-efficient order plan for your first production run based on your target market and sales channel.
How long does it take to launch a private label or custom formulated product?
For private label orders using an existing formulation from our catalogue, timelines typically run 3 to 5 weeks from purchase order confirmation to dispatch — this covers artwork approval, packaging procurement, filling, quality checks, and batch documentation. Standard packaging in stock can move even faster.
Custom formulation projects take longer because they involve iterative development: an initial brief and consultation, 2 to 4 rounds of sample formulation and feedback, stability and compatibility testing (which alone can take 2 to 6 weeks depending on the product type), regulatory documentation, and finally bulk production. End-to-end, most custom formulation launches are ready in 8 to 14 weeks. We provide a detailed project timeline with milestones at the start of every engagement so you always know exactly where your product stands.
What product categories does Glamcos Labs manufacture?
We manufacture across a wide range of personal care and beauty categories including hair care (shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, hair serums, hair masks), skin care (face wash, moisturizers, serums, sunscreens, body lotions), foot care, personal hygiene and intimate care, makeup and beauty, home care, oral care, baby care, men’s grooming, ayurvedic and herbal formulations, perfumes and deodorants, aerosol products, bath and shower essentials, pet care, and lip care.
Whether you’re building a single hero SKU or a full multi-category product line, our formulation and production teams have experience across each of these categories, backed by an in-house R&D lab and quality-tested raw material sourcing. Browse our full Product Catalog to see specific formulations available for private label under each category.
Can I get product samples before placing a bulk order?
Yes. We strongly encourage every client to request and evaluate physical samples before committing to a bulk production run — it’s the single best way to confirm texture, fragrance, performance, and packaging fit meet your expectations. Samples of our existing private label formulations can usually be dispatched within a few working days of request.
For custom formulation projects, sample rounds are a built-in part of the development process: our chemists prepare an initial prototype, you review and share feedback on texture, scent, color, and performance, and we refine the formula through additional rounds until it’s approved. Only once a sample is fully signed off do we move into bulk manufacturing, which protects you from costly reformulation after a large batch has already been produced.
What packaging options are available, and can I use my own packaging?
We offer a wide range of stock packaging formats — bottles, jars, tubes, pumps, airless dispensers, sachets, and pouches — across multiple sizes, which keeps costs down and lead times short since these are readily available. Custom packaging is also available, including custom-molded bottles, printed cartons, branded shrink sleeves, and premium finishes like matte lamination, spot UV, and foil stamping, though custom tooling and printing generally add lead time and require higher order volumes to be cost-effective.
If you already have your own packaging supplier or have sourced specific components, we can work with client-supplied packaging in most cases — our production team will review compatibility with the formulation (particularly for actives-heavy or fragrance-heavy products) before confirming the fill schedule.
Are your products safe, tested, and compliant with regulations?
Yes. Every formulation — whether from our existing catalog or newly custom developed — goes through a structured quality control process including raw material verification, in-process quality checks, microbial and stability testing, and batch documentation before it is approved for dispatch. Our manufacturing facility follows Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) principles, and we maintain compliance documentation aligned with applicable cosmetic and personal care regulations for domestic and export markets.
For brands exporting internationally, we can assist with the documentation typically required — Certificate of Analysis (COA), Certificate of Free Sale, ingredient (INCI) declarations, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) — so your regulatory or compliance team has what they need for each destination market. If your target market has specific regulatory requirements (such as FDA, EU Cosmetics Regulation, or GCC standards), let us know early so our formulation team can account for restricted or regulated ingredients from the start.
Do you manufacture for international brands and handle export shipping?
Yes, we regularly manufacture for brands outside India and support export documentation and logistics coordination for international shipments. We work with clients across a range of countries and can advise on export packaging requirements (such as tamper-evident seals, transit-safe secondary packaging, and multi-language labeling where applicable) to help your shipment clear customs smoothly.
If you’re an international brand exploring private label or contract manufacturing in India, our team can walk you through country-specific considerations — currency and payment terms, freight options (sea versus air), estimated landed cost, and lead time — as part of your initial consultation so there are no surprises once production begins.
What is contract manufacturing and when should I choose it over private label?
Contract manufacturing means we produce your product to your exact specifications — your formula (or one developed with you), your packaging, your branding — under a manufacturing agreement, typically at larger production volumes with more dedicated production planning than a standard private label order. It’s the right choice once your brand has validated demand and you want tighter control over formulation exclusivity, packaging specification, batch scheduling, and supply chain continuity, without owning and operating your own factory.
Many brands follow a natural progression: start with private label to launch quickly and test the market, move top-performing SKUs into custom formulation to build a differentiated, ownable product, and then shift to a contract manufacturing arrangement as volumes grow and they need dedicated capacity, consistent scheduling, and closer collaboration on quality specifications and cost optimization.
Who owns the formula — can I have an exclusive, unique product?
For private label products selected from our existing catalog, the base formulation is shared across clients (though your branding, packaging, and any fragrance or minor customization is unique to you). For custom formulation and contract manufacturing projects, we can structure the engagement so the specific formula developed for your brand is exclusive to you and not sold or replicated for other clients — this is a common request and one we’re set up to accommodate through a formulation exclusivity agreement.
If exclusivity is important to your brand positioning — for example if you’re building a premium or clinically-differentiated skincare line — we recommend discussing this upfront during your initial consultation so it’s documented clearly before development begins.
What information do you need to get started with a formulation brief?
To put together an accurate quote and formulation brief, it helps to share: the product category and type (e.g., sulfate-free shampoo, vitamin C face serum), your target customer and key claims (e.g., “for frizzy hair,” “brightening,” “fragrance-free”), any specific actives or ingredients you want included or avoided, preferred texture and fragrance direction, target price point and expected order quantity, packaging preferences, and your target launch timeline.
You don’t need to have every detail finalized — our team is experienced at translating a rough brand vision into a workable formulation spec during the consultation call. The more clarity you can provide upfront, the fewer revision rounds are typically needed, which keeps your project on schedule.
What are your payment terms?
Payment terms vary by order type and volume but typically follow a milestone structure — for example, an advance payment to confirm the purchase order and begin raw material procurement, with the balance due prior to dispatch. For larger or recurring contract manufacturing arrangements, we can discuss structured payment schedules aligned to production milestones. Exact terms are confirmed in your quotation and order confirmation, and our team is happy to walk through payment options during your consultation.
Can you help with product labeling, artwork, and compliance-ready design?
Yes. While brand identity and creative design are typically owned by our clients or their design agency, our team reviews all artwork before printing to check that mandatory declarations — ingredient (INCI) list, net quantity, manufacturing and expiry details, manufacturer information, and any category-specific warnings — are correctly formatted and compliant for your target market. This pre-print compliance check helps avoid costly reprints after packaging has already been produced. If you don’t have a designer, we can also recommend trusted design partners we’ve worked with before.
Do you offer vegan, cruelty-free, natural, or Ayurvedic formulations?
Yes. A significant part of our catalog and custom formulation capability is built around clean-label positioning — vegan formulations free from animal-derived ingredients, cruelty-free products developed without animal testing, natural and Ayurvedic formulations using plant-based actives and traditional herbal ingredients, and sulfate-free, paraben-free, and silicone-free options across hair and skin care. If a specific certification (such as a vegan or cruelty-free seal) is important for your brand’s positioning, let us know during your consultation so we can confirm formulation compatibility and documentation requirements from the outset.
What happens after I place an order — what does the production process look like?
Once your purchase order and payment terms are confirmed, our process runs through clearly tracked stages: raw material procurement and quality verification, batch manufacturing under controlled conditions, in-process quality checks at each stage, filling and packing according to your approved specifications, final quality control and batch documentation (including Certificate of Analysis), and finally dispatch with shipping documentation. You’ll have a dedicated point of contact who shares timeline updates at each milestone, so you’re never left wondering where your order stands.
How do I request a quote or start a project with Glamcos Labs?
The fastest way to get started is through the enquiry form at the bottom of any page on this website — simply share your brand type, target country, product category, manufacturing requirement (private label, custom formulation, or contract manufacturing), estimated quantity, and any packaging or product details you already have in mind. Our team typically responds within 1–2 business days with next steps, and for most projects the next step is a short discovery call to align on your formulation brief, timeline, and budget before we prepare a formal quotation.
